IMAGE STITCHING

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever torn a photograph out of rage and regretted it the second later and wanted it to go back to how it was – a whole?

Yeah, me too.

While it is not entirely possible to get that torn photograph back, there is something that is enabled to do something similar, only digitally.

Image Stitching is such an application where you can stitch a particular group of images and create a composite image that is the culmination of those scenes. Image Stitching is an original concept that has had the good fortune of coming into life because of the immensely capable Digital Content Team of Virtual Reality Systems.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY IMAGE STITCHING?

Image Stitching is an application in Computer Vision that uses the algorithm of OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library). The goal of this Image Stitching application is to stitch multiple images (that share some common region) together and create an output panorama of an aesthetically pleasing stitched image scene.

The Image Stitching application works best if the photographic images have some overlapping fields of view and hence, produce seamless results.

HOW DOES THE IMAGE STITCHING APPLICATION WORK?

The Image Stitching application works in several delicate steps that should be carefully followed to produce seamless and accurate stitched image results.

The first step is called Keypoint Detection where a certain correspondence is found between the features of the set of images. This allows the Image Stitching application to estimate the transformation that is necessary to align one image with the other.

The next step is called Image Registration where the features of a set of images are matched to minimize the differences between them. The third step is called Alignment where an image is transformed in certain ways to match the viewpoint of the other image.

The final step is called Image Blending where the final adjustments are done such as, fixing the colors or merging the seam lines to minimize the visibility of seams between the images and produce a beautifully segmented panorama of stitched images.

USES OF THE IMAGE STITCHING APPLICATION IN THE INDUSTRY

The Image Stitching application is widely used in a number of aspects such as the following:

  • Panorama creation

The Image Stitching application is used to capture a big scene by capturing multiple images of the entire scene and stitching all the bits and pieces together into one big panorama of images.

  • Document mosaicing

The Image Stitching application is used to stitch multiple overlapping images of a document collectively to create one huge, high-resolution piece of document.

  • Object removal

The Image Stitching application is used to carefully omit objects in an image by studying the input image, removing the foreground, estimating the background, and producing a seamless image where the target object is successfully removed.

  • Medical purposes

The Image Stitching application is used to align MRI images to provide a high definition view along with immense clarity and precision.
